Can you explain broadband or high-speed Internet connections?

The main types of broadband or high-speed Internet connections are cable modem, DSL, T-1, Fractional T-1, and T3.

The majority of broadband connections can support RSCall. The terms broadband and high-speed are used interchangeably to demonstrate an Internet connection capable of carrying multiple voice, video, and data transmissions simultaneously.

What is Voice over IP (VoIP)?

VoIP (Voice over IP) technology enables you to make calls over your broadband Internet connection using your existing home phone and your cell phone. VoIP allows for the same quality of calls as you are receiving from your current telephone provider, with more features, and significantly less cost.

Do I need a router to use RSCall?

A router manages the distribution of data to and from multiple devices on a network. If you already have a router connected between your broadband Internet access and your PC, you should be able to use RSCall with no problems.

Simply make sure that your router provides Network Access Translation (NAT) and DHCP for your network. Most common routers support this functionality. Your current router will allow you to use your computer to surf the web and receive email while using your RSCall phone service.

If you have your own router, plug your router into the WAN port instead of using your cable modem Ethernet connection.

If you do not have a router, RSCall has a routing feature built into the device, so you will not need to purchase a router. Simply follow our QuickStart Guide to start using RSCall today.

Please note:

For DSL Internet service, your router is typically configured for PPPoE. Certain cable modem services require that the MAC address is cloned in the router configurations. Please check your router’s user manual or manufacturer’s website for more information.

Certain DSL providers require a router for the purpose of compatibility and use of their service.

So with RSCall you do not need to use a physical answering machine at home – or the Voice Mail that you can purchase additionally from your local phone service provider.

If you choose to use a telephone that has an answering system, please note that the default for RSCall Voice Mail is “ON” when you first activate your RSCall account. Please see our Features Guide for any questions.

Can my RSCall account handle all the phones in my house?

There are several ways to use your RSCall device in order to accommodate several lines. Please note that currently port “Phone 1” is available for use with RSCall.

  • If you purchase a multi-line phone jack adapter, and connect it into the Phone 1 port of your RSCall device, this will allow you to have multiple phones wired on your RSCall account. You can purchase multi-line phone jack adapters at any electronics store.

  • If you have a cordless telephone system with extra handsets, you can plug the base station of your phone system directly into the RSCall device. This will allow all the phones on that system to be used with your account. The extra handsets can be placed anywhere in your home. These cordless telephone systems can be purchased at any electronics store.

  • If you purchase wireless phone jacks, the base unit of your telephone would plug into your RSCall device and the wireless jacks into your household electrical outlets. Any telephone can connect to wireless jacks. Although, with this system only the telephone on the main base unit will display incoming Caller ID information. Wireless jacks can give you the multiple home extensions, but you may experience periodic dropped calls on the extension phones and not be able to speak on more than one phone at a time. You can purchase the wireless jack telephone equipment at telephone accessory or electronics stores.

  • If you are familiar with telephone technology, you can plug your RSCall device directly into the existing telephone wiring in your home. This would theoretically distribute your RSCall service to all existing telephone jacks in your home. We do not recommend plugging anything other than a telephone line into your RSCall device, and we recommend that you seek the professional direction of an electrician or someone familiar with telephone wiring.

For this option we recommend you have trained professional check the wiring on your telephone jacks to ensure you do not have live PSTN voltage before connecting your RSCall device.
